SWINE FLU - MY TAKE
I was just watching the news on TV, and something hit me. Real hard. I'm using figurative language here, if you still haven't realized. It was about swine flu. Now, you might say "Here we go again...", but before you even think if opening that pie hole of yours, think about this. The officials has made it very clear that the virus is not prevalent among porcine. The virus only infects humans and those who consume pork shouldn't think twice of doing so. This was one of the reasons why i was rather surprised when i heard pork sales in Singapore dropped. Well, people have to be educated. Otherwise the older generation will begin assuming things and tell the supposedly-smarter-and-better-educated youths nonsensical things.
The virus is said to have part of avian, human and pig DNA sequences. It is a type A influenza virus and it can mutate faster than the avian flu. Looks like the flu bug is very smart nowadays. The unlikely conbination of the DNA sequence makes me think that it is somehow manufactured from different DNA, manufactured by humans. But I'm still rather ignorant in this field, so anyone who thinks therwise can just tag me.
The flu virus, H1N1, has gone beyond the possibility of quarantine. It can no longer be quarantined. But this doesn't mean that it is an instant pandemic. Our only hope now is to pray hard that we Singapore is not hit by the outbreak, because that'll be the dawn of disaster for the little cili padi. I'm thankful that the government has taken measures to curb the outbreak in Singapore, with the MOE already passing out circulars for schools to conduct temperature taking excercises, the hospitals (SGH) has limited visitors into their A&E department to two people at any one time, and polyclinics provide masks for sick people to wear.
With the outbreak of the flu virus, the human population is not the only thing that has its head on the chopping block. The economy, with the recession already there to make things bad, is going to take a hard blow. Tourism and Airline industries are already suffering; there has been a drop in airline shares overnight. However, the silver lining in this huge cumulonimbus is the fact that pharmaceutical industries are making lots of money from Tamiflu sales. So it's something very complex, this virus. So god help us all.
