Yesterday was MSters Movie Mayhem. Was super fun, with Hui Yi joining us for the first time ever! We watched Slumdog Millionaire at Vivo GV. Most of us(not mentioning names, right Eileen?) had doubts about the movie, whether or not it was worth the $8.50, and the 2 hours. But our doubts were cleared when the lights went down, and the movie began.
Slumdog millionaire is about how a boy from the slums became a millionaire in the game show "WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?". Like the title's not obvious enough. So, the boy played on the show, and got all the answers correct. Then he had to come back the next night to complete his last RP20,000,000 question. After the show, he was kidnapped by the police (paradoxical right?) for being a suspect of cheating. Apparently people find it incredulous for a boy from the slums to be a genius. But truth be told, he was no genius at all. He'sjust had lots of life experience, and the luck of a thousand gamblers.
He was soon vindicated, after a whole night of telling the police sergeant how he actually managed to answer all those questions. He then returned to the gameshow and won his million, with a whole bunch of luck, suspense and the kind of thrill that keeps the audience at the edge of their seats.
Apart from the very unlikely chance that the boy were to be asked questions from his childhood, the love story that follows throughout the whole movie was a very romantic and endearing one. I personally like the way his life was broken up into 3 parts, from his younger years, to when he was reacing puberty and adolescent and when he was older(about, say 18?). The way the subtitles(since some of the speech was in hindi) were displayed also appealed to me. The movie was not only meant for entertainment purposes, but it also opened the audience's eyes to the lives of slum-dogs. It was not only tear-jerking, it was educational as well.
On that note, I would really recommend people to watch this movie and get it on DVD as well. It really deserved the 8 Academy Awards , for it is a movie worth watching. All in all, Slumdog was a real movie experience, and kudos to Danny Boyle for an excellent job.
